Collaborative Support for Broadband Expansion

Published on: Wednesday July 22nd, 2020

Southern Tier 8 Regional Board and partner agencies in Broome, Chenango, Cortland, and Delaware counties announce continued support for broadband expansion across the region.

PURPOSE:

To increase internet accessibility for telecommuting, telehealth and remote learning opportunities for employers, residents, students and patients throughout the region.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT. THE TIME IS NOW.

Over the last 10 years, internet access has become a significant resource for economic growth and wellness across our rural communities. And now, with the impact of COVID-19, broadband access has never been more critical. With the mass of our population working and operating businesses from home, having doctor consultations, and attending school via remote learning, efficient broadband connection is not a trivial matter, rather, it is an absolute necessity.
In addition, broadband is expected from new businesses and new residents looking to relocate to our region in order to operate efficiently. Although New York State has been committed to address broadband needs, this spring, schools were quickly reminded that many areas are still left underserved and satellite internet cannot accommodate speeds to support developing applications.

HOW TO MEET THIS CHALLENGE. COMING TOGETHER ...THE LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE.

The task of expanding broadband access across counties is a paramount one and local Economic Development & Planning teams recognize the need to improve access in rural areas. The team is seeking insight from 49 school districts across four counties to identify & assess current underserved areas. They will then raise awareness for potential solutions & partnerships and identify applicable funding &/or buildout options.
There has not been a more critical time to collaborate and pursue affordable broadband solutions throughout our region.
