What it is.

The Climate Smart Communities (CSC) is a New York State program that helps local governments reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to a changing climate. The program offers grants, rebates for electric vehicles, and free technical assistance.

Climate Smart Communities Coordinators are available to provide free technical assistance to communities across all 10 regions of New York State. Southern Tier 8 provides coordination to communities in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Tioga, and Tompkins Counties.

Southern Tier 8 Regional Board coordinators help local governments by:

  • Facilitating local climate change mitigation, climate adaptation and resiliency planning, including helping municipalities with Climate Adaptation Plans
  • Supporting the implementation and management of local climate action plans, projects, and with CSC certification actions
  • Providing planning support, education, capacity building, and training

What it accomplishes.

Southern Tier 8 Regional Board staff are invested in helping local municipalities adapt to the effects of a changing climate, increase resiliency, and build internal capacity. The CSC program also helps New York State achieve its Climate Action Goals identified in the 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (Climate Act of 2019).

Local community development for achieving New York State’s Climate Action Goals, as prioritized in the 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (Climate Act).
